The Big Bang Theory, Season 7, Episode 5, Recap: Workplace Proximity

Sheldon and Amy’s relationship is tested when she takes a job at his university. Howard’s attempt to give Sheldon advice turns into a fight with Bernadette.

Amy receives an offer to work on a project at Sheldon’s university. She asks him if he is okay with her working there for a bit and Sheldon doesn’t see a problem with it, but Howard suggests it could put a strain on their relationship. “Hang out all day and then be expected to do it in the evening? There’s no way I would let Bernadette work with me,” he says. Which causes problems for both of them…

Howard and Bernadette

Sheldon reveals to Bernadette what Howard said about her. Bernadette is upset and orders Howard out of the house. Howard stays with Raj, and they hang out and play video games. Later Bernadette comes over and admits that she feels left out when Howard spends all day with his friends and then wants to do it in the evening as well. Howard apologizes and promises to change “tomorrow”. Why tomorrow? He wants to finish the video game. Bernadette gets angry all over again. She swears she will not take Howard back until he comes begging on his knees.

Amy and Sheldon

When Amy receives the original offer, Sheldon agreed that she should take it. When he comes back and tells her (and Bernadette) what Howard said, he expects her to decline the job. Amy has already accepted. She agrees to not bother Sheldon at work at all. During lunch, Sheldon sits with his friends as usual while Amy sits with her new coworkers. Soon Sheldon begins to feel sorry for Amy, “left out” of the “cool table”, so he goes over, introduces himself as Amy’s boyfriend, and then proceeds to embarrass her in front of her coworkers. Later that day, Sheldon comes into Amy’s office to insult her work and informs her that she “gets” to drive him home. Amy is already irritated at him for giving her coworkers a bad impression, and Sheldon really doesn’t understand that he did anything wrong. That night, Sheldon knocks on Amy’s door. He says he can’t sleep. But instead of apologizing, he blames the drama on Amy’s irrational reactions and says she is lucky to have him. Amy slams the door in his face.

And so this episode ends with both Amy and Bernadette mad at their partners. Let’s see what happens next week.
