Last Man Standing, Season 3, Episode 3, Recap: Pledging

Ed decides to play undercover boss at The Outdoor Man, but things get way out of hand. When Mandy joins a sorority, she has no time for class…or Kyle!

Ed (a.k.a. Troy Fontaine)

Ed Alzate as Troy Fontaine

The loading dock at The Outdoor Man is asking management to hire more workers. They claim they are understaffed, but Ed Alzate thinks some of his employees are slacking off on the job. Taking his inspiration from an Undercover Boss-like television show, Ed decides to create an alter ego: Troy Fontaine. Fitting himself with a brown pony tail and a pair of tinted glasses, Ed becomes an employee in the loading dock area. First day on the job he gets commended for his work ethic, and also realizes that the loading dock employees are hard workers: they really are understaffed. However, Ed is enjoying his new life too much to quit. Ed likes having less responsibility. But Mike Baxter is feeling the pressure of administrative duties without Ed to take care of things. Eventually, Ed realizes that he is fooling himself if he believes Troy can exist any longer. Troy gets fired, and Ed resumes his own (real) life.

Mandy and Kyle

Mandy is feeling somewhat disinterested in college. College is more work than she thought it would be and the novelty of it is starting to wear off. Also, Mandy has not made any friends at college and depends on Kyle to accompany her to everything. To get Mandy more involved with others, her mom Vanessa suggests she join a sorority. Vanessa had a great experience with her sorority when she was in college. She talks to Mandy about the benefits of meeting new people and putting herself out there. Mandy really enjoys the sorority and makes many new friends. But the more time she spends with her new friends, the less time she has for Kyle and for studying. Vanessa suggests that it might be best for Mandy to put her relationship with Kyle on hold and explore other options. Mandy goes to break up with Kyle. But as she explains that she does not have enough time for him in her life, Kyle explains his point of view. Kyle tells Mandy that allKyle and Mandy he really wants is for her to succeed at school. Kyle realizes that education is more important than anything else, even if Mandy doesn’t. Mandy realizes that she has been too focused on fitting in and finding a social life when she should just be happy with herself. Mandy quits the sorority and decides to stop leaning on Kyle every moment of the day. She realizes that it is okay to be lonely sometimes, and her relationship with Kyle is a very important thing.
