Mandy urges Kyle to grow a backbone…and is surprised at the result. When Vanessa feels lonely without Kristin and Mandy to go out with, Mike encourages Vanessa and Eve to bond.
Kyle and Mandy
Kyle is a pushover quite a bit of the time, but mostly when it comes to Mandy’s dad Mike. He is all too eager to wax the driveway, fix the car, even drag a dead animal from under the house. When Mandy plans dates with Kyle such as going shopping, Kyle instead agrees to help Mike. Mandy is tired of her plans being interrupted by her father. She pushes Kyle to stand up for himself and learn to say “No”. Mike tries to turn the tables by convincing Kyle that it is Mandy who needs to be told “No”. Kyle realizes he does have to stand up for himself: and he has to stand up to both of them. He firmly tells Mike he will not do any more jobs. Kyle then turns around and tells Mandy he wants to plan their dates for a change.
Eve and Vanessa
With Kristin in her own apartment and Mandy going to college, Vanessa realizes she has no one to visit the mall or the spa with. She tries to connect with Eve, but Eve is only interested in sports. She bothers Mike and drags him to a French movie. Searching for a solution, Mike suggests that Vanessa take Eve driving. Their driving lesson turns into a complete disaster; unlike her legalistic mother, Eve drive like she’s in Grand Theft Auto. Eve gets upset because she believes her mother only wants to hang out with her because she has no choice. After a talk with Mike, Eve decides to try again with Vanessa. The two search for an activity they both like to do, but can’t think of anything…until Vanessa mentions her job. “I’m decommissioning the entry point to a coal seam…We initiate a controlled implosion to seal the main shaft,” she
says. At the mention of “blowing something up”, Eve is immediately interested. Vanessa and Eve realize they do have things in common after all. Vanessa lets Eve drive to the work site, and Eve promises to obey her mother’s rules. As Eve learns more about her Vanessa’s job, Vanessa begins to take more of an interest in the things Eve likes.
